Press Release:
Now Open: Introducing The Old Town Shop
A New Gift & Local Artisan Boutique Arrives in Alexandria
April 20, 2017 (Alexandria, VA) — New gift boutique – The Old Town Shop, officially opens its doors next week bringing to the area a unique take on local gifts to celebrate Alexandria’s charm and historic heritage. The store, located at 105 South Union Street, offers custom gifts and Old Town Alexandria merchandise tailored to visitors and residents alike.
The Old Town Shop will be the only area shop to feature a variety of local curated artisan products that are offered at the Old Town Farmers’ Market in the section of the store called “Locals’ Alley”. In addition, the Shop has created unique, custom designed “OTX” and Old Town Alexandria branded merchandise. Other gifts include, gourmet food, books, collectives, and hospitality gifts for tourists and residents. “The Port” is the section of the store that promotes the history of Alexandria known as The Port City, with a representation of twelve (12) Virginia state milemarkers to depict the historic importance of Alexandria.
The Shop expects to have a rotating Alexandria focused history exhibition area featuring artifacts from surrounding historic partners such as the Alexandria Archeology Museum, the Office of Historic Alexandria, and George Washington’s Mt. Vernon Estate.

The Locals’ Alley section will be dedicated to showcasing a variety of artisans who vend regularly at the Saturday Alexandria Farmers’ Market, giving artists an outlet to have a more permanent presence in a retail space.Examples of vendors that will be featured include Truly Life (bath & body), Capital City Candles (soy candles), Amalthea Ridge (goat milk bath products), Napier Farms (local jams & jellies), Dimitri Olive Farms (olive oil & gourmet vinegars) and Ester’s Granola.
Store Owner and long-time Alexandria resident and business owner Valerie Ianieri decided to open the store concept because she felt there was a lack of unique and custom product for Old Town Alexandria. “We are excited to open a Shop that is dedicated to promoting and celebrating the charm and uniqueness of Old Town Alexandria,” says Ms. Ianieri. “From the Kids Cove to Locals’ Alley, we have custom gifts for everyone, even our vibrant dog community.”
The store will also feature regular events that will spotlight local vendors, writers, and artisans that strengthen our community.
The Old Town Shop focus is to preserve and promote the history, creativity, and culture of Alexandria locals and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Shop will be open seven days a week. For store hours visit http://www.theoldtownshop.com/.

Our Old Town Shop Story: There I was an hour before our engagement photos in Old Town Alexandria, scrambling to find a chalkboard. My fiance and I wanted to write our wedding date and wedding hashtag on the board to be part of our pictures. I had been up and down King Street and was unsuccessful at every turn. I was about to give up when I came across The Old Town Shop on Union Street. It looked like a fun store, so I stopped in to give it one more try. As I was browsing the store, I found what I was looking for! However, I was not 100% sure the item was for sale, so I asked the two employees at the store how much the item was. They also were unsure if it was an item for sale or a sign to write for items they were selling. I told them my dilemma about the engagement photos and their faces lit up. One of the employees got on the phone with her manager to describe my situation and ask about the item. When she got off the phone she had a smile on our face and said, “This is a gift from us!” I was take aback, I couldn’t believe it! The Old Town Shop really saved the day for our photos, which turned out lovely. A couple of weeks later my fiance and I went back to give The Old Town Shop employees one of our photos and to return the chalkboard they gave us. The manager and employees were thrilled to see us again, giving us big hugs, but they told us to keep the chalkboard as a memory to cherish. As my fiance and I plan our wedding, we see the chalkboard in our home and smile at the memory of that day. The Old Town Shop is part of our love story forever now, and we could not be happier about that. – Ashwin Korde
